Kitui County Governor Charity Ngilu has urged the National Government to accelerate the construction of a bridge across river Enziu following the tragic death of nearly 33 people.

Addressing residents after making a visit to the scene to witness rescue operations, Ngilu said that many people over the years have lost their lives trying to cross the killer river.

“It is unfortunate that we lose lives in this river every rainy season. The State must break the deadly cycle by casting a proper bridge across Enziu River,” said Ngilu.

Ngilu has promised to put pressure on the national government to ensure that the bridge has been constructed to avoid similar horrific incidents to happen.

She promised the families of the victims that her government will stand with them as they go through the painful loss of their loved ones.

Her sentiment comes after a multi-agency team formed by the Kenya Defence Forces, National Youth Service, National Police Service, Kitui County Government, and civilians pulled out the wreckage from the river bed on Sunday afternoon.

Divers kept scouring the area for the bodies and as the day went by, they recovered more bodies and, by Sunday evening; the numbers registered were 33.
