ODM leader Raila Odinga concluded his two-day tour of Nyeri County on Saturday.

Raila’s landed in Kabiruini grounds in Nyeri on Friday to a warm reception by the locals.

He was accompanied by his wife, Ida Odinga during the visit.

During the meeting held at the Kabiruini Grounds, a group of elders from the region endorsed Raila to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Raila-led group of Luo elders met the Kikuyu elders and agreed to work together and support Raila’s ‘Azimio La Umoja campaign.

Raila said the union was a symbol of declaration that the two communities, namely Kikuyu and Luo, will work together.

They challenged other communities to support the Azimio La Umoja initiative.

In a symbolic gesture, Ida was given a Kikuyu name; Nyawira and in return, she gave goodies to the people of Nyeri which included fish, as it is a tradition for the Luo to carry gifts whenever they go visiting.

The elders in the meeting lashed out at Deputy President William Ruto for disrespecting the Agikuyu and their Meru brothers following his attacks on Meru Governor Kiraity Murungi and Kiambu Governor James Nyoro.

Raila asked the people of Nyeri to trust him and his leadership as he outlined his agenda for them.

A section of Mount Kenya region leaders who were present during the meeting pledged their support for Raila’s presidential bid. They told the residents of the region that Raila was their best bet.

They said Raila has been tried and tested and would make a good leader for the country.

The leaders also asked the former prime minister to consider the Mount Kenya community once he ascents to the presidency.

Later in the day, Raila went for a youth meeting where he spoke with the youth from the region.

Raila promised to implement the award or 30 per cent of government tenders to the youth once he becomes president.

On Saturday, Raila was at Ruringu Stadium, where he held his ‘Azimio La Umoja’ meeting and later held rallies in Nyeri Town and Othaya Constituency.

Other leaders from the region who backed his presidential candidature and presented their demands to him joined in his.

Two matters that the leaders were keen on were the continuation of pending development projects in the region and inclusion in the next government.
