Nairobi County Governor Mike Sonko, who flew tens of Members of the County Assembly, has hidden the MCAs and their phones in his Kimerimeta residence in Kwale County to scuttle his ouster.

Sonko adopted the strategy ahead of the tabling of the impeachment motion against him in the Nairobi County Assembly on Thursday.

Sources told Swala Nyeti that Sonko is hosting more than 60 MCAs from the ruling Jubilee Party, Wiper and ODM among others who are reported to be opposing the bid to kick him out.

Sonko and the allied MCAs have claimed that they have sufficient numbers to kill the impeachment motion targeting Sonko who has refused to sign the county’s 2020-2021 budget.

On Thursday last week, when the motion was tabled, a total of 86 MCAs appended their signature to the notice, even as a section have either withdrawn them or claimed forgery.

For the impeachment motion to succeed a total of 82 MCAs out of the 122 in county assembly need to cast their ballot in support of the motion, even as Jubilee suspended two MCAs.

This comes as ODM, the party headed by Raila Odinga, suspended 10 MCAs for three to six months for what it termed as disciplinary issues, with nine from the Nairobi County Assembly.

Grounds for Sonko’s removal include gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, committing a crime and lacking the mental capability to run the Nairobi county government.
