Security has been heightened across the country following the arrest of the three terror convicts who had escaped from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison on Monday. 

This was announced on Thursday by the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government as it confirmed the arrival of the three escapees at the correctional facility.

Interior CS Fred Matiangi was at Kamiti to witness their arrival and re-incarceration at the facility and he assured that the authorities had beefed up security to avert any incidences.

He praised Kenya's security agents for their swift action and described the Monday incident as a vital lesson proving there are lapses that need a radical change in the prison security systems.

The CS asserted that the prison break was an unforgivable mistake by the authorities involved and assured that the police officers found to be involved will face full justice.

“The mistakes that were committed here on Monday are unforgivable. It was a very frightening and horrific dereliction of duty. What happened here was a rude awakening that there are certain lapses that we need to deal with. We have officers that we suspect failed in their duties, we will ensure that the law takes its course and we bring all those involved to justice,” Matiang’i said.

Matiang’i announced that the relevant government security agencies had heightened vigilance with more focus directed towards surveillance to avert any potential threats.

He, however, alerted the public that there could be some necessary inconveniences that may be experienced in the coming days as the authorities seek to secure them.

“We have raised the level of alertness and effected far-reaching changes. You are going to notice that we have changed the screening systems at the airports and the SGR. We are not out of the woods yet. We are in an unusual space because of what is happening around us. Please let us be careful and watchful,” he said.

He added that the Kenya Prisons Service will liais with the Ministry of ICT to install modern, tech-driven security systems in Kamiti Maximum Prison and other correctional facilities.
