Said al-Islam Gaddafi, son of the former President of Libya Colonel Muammar Gaddafi has registered his interest to vie for the Libyan presidency in the elections scheduled for December 24, 2021.

The 49-year-old Saif is the second-born son of the late Gaddafi and his second wife Safia.

When his father was alive, Saif was in charge of his father’s public relations and performed Gaddafi’s diplomatic roles on his behalf.

Saif is known for turning down his father's tremendous offer of Libya’s second-highest post.

The International Criminal Court issued a warrant of arrest against him on June 27, 2011, for charges of crime against humanity against the Libyan people.

He was accused of killing and persecuting civilians, charges that he vehemently denied.

A militia group known as the Zintan captured Saif in Southern Libya on November 19, 2011, after the Libyan civil war ended.

A Tripoli court handed Saif a death sentence on July 28, 2015, in absentia, for crimes he allegedly committed during the civil war in a widely criticised trial.

Saif remained in custody until June 10, 2017, when he was released from prison and was given full amnesty.

He is a Bachelor of Science Degree holder in Engineering Science from Al Fateh University, an MBA from Vienna's Imadec Business School in 2000 and a controversial PhD Degree from London School of Economics.

He decided to dress like his father 10 years on from the infamous Bab Al Azizya speech in the early days of the February 17 revolution 2011
