Greencard Mtaani and MasterCard Foundation have today launched a project in Kibera and parts of Langata dubbed "ItsUpToUs".

The project seeks to sensitize the community on the risks that the Covid-19 has brought and how to navigate the pandemic period.

The proposed activities set to take place during the sensitization week include, water supply to 16 villages, wash training to 12 schools with 30 children per school in six wards, 40 hand wash stations (7 wards to receive two each, 12 schools to get 2 each and 2 at the office), conduct one clean-up exercise in each of the 7 wards and also conduct media engagements.

Fred Juma, Greencard Mtaani Founder and Managing Director, said the program will also introduce Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) who will be taken through a series of trainings and deployed to various remote areas to provide the critical services.

Juma added that the partnership also introduced a Village Saving and Loans Association (VSAL), which seeks to sensitize the community on economic recovery after the pandemic.

The model will offer a three-day training with the aim of creating confidence, leadership, financial discipline, savings and loans.

Juma said the Kibera and Langata residents will have a chance to choose their preferred business plan and get lessons on how to best implement their ideas, with the VSAL targeting up to 160 residents within the identified areas.

Start-up materials will be channelled to 16 groups upon completion of the training and youth will also receive training on how to make soap and fabric softeners to support the economy that has been adversely affected by the pandemic.

Persons with disabilities will also benefit from the program which runs for two months.
