As the ongoing voter registration exercise comes to an end, the Election Observation Group ELOG has urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission IEBC to continue with voter education so as to avoid voter apathy among Kenyans.

In their report, the lobby group said it is only 10 months to the general election and the commission has failed to hit its target of 4.5 million voters.

ELOG now demands the commission led by chairman Wafula Chebukati to continue creating awareness among Kenyans and continue with the voter registration at the constituency level.

“To this end, ELOG recommends that IEBC makes it clear to the citizenry that the end of the ECVR is not the end of voter registration and eligible Kenyans can still visit the IEBC constituency offices to get registered as well change their registration details,” read the statement.

Initially, IEBC had targeted at least 4.5 million new voters in the month-long mass exercise but attained 13% of the target.

ELOG has furtherly added that the low turnout of voter registration was due to a lack of national identification documents among others.

''These low numbers in the week under observation have once again been attributed to lack of national identification documents among other reasons despite the relevant duty bearers promising to expedite the processing and issuance of the same”, ELOG said.

Today will be the last day for voter registration.
