The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is set to begin voter education for people living with disabilities.

The commission has held a consolidative forum to discuss ways of expanding the participation of PWDs in the electoral process.

IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati has said that the commission is working with other institutions to provide information, education and communication templates in Braille and sign language videos for the visual and hearing impairment.

He said the commission is in the process of acquiring polling booths that can be accessed easily by people with special needs to ensure secrecy of vote and convenience during the marking of ballot papers by voters.

“ IEBC is registering PWDs in places of their convenience during the ECVR 2021 and is giving priority to PWDs to register and vote in cases of long queues", said Chebukati.

People with special needs have also been urged to be active participants in political partics.

On Monday, Chebukati said the commission has registered 491,968 new voters in two weeks.

He said that the figures represent 15.47% of the target of three million voters in a month .

He added that within the two weeks, the commission had received and serviced a total of 49,656 transfer request.

He has however clarified that there shall be no voter transfer services at Huduma Centre.

“The kits at the Huduma Centres have been opened to facilitate registration of new voters to any registration centre/polling station of their choice across the country.” Chebukati clarified.
