Inspector General of police Hilary Mutyambai has clarified he never removed traffic officers nor roadblocks from our roads.

Mutyambai was responding to a Twitter user who engaged him on the platform during an ‘Engage the IG’ session.

The user identified as Macharia asked if traffic officers follow Mutyambai’s instructions because, according to Macharia, the traffic officers are all over extorting bribes from motorists.

Macharia was referring to the statement that the IG made via a memo dated September 3, 2021, that directed police against erecting roadblocks without proper approval or detaining vehicles on the road for long periods of time without proper cause.

“You gave instructions for traffic officer to get out of our Roads but they are allover extorting bribe from motorist. Don't they follow your instructions or they are just PR exercise,” asked Macharia.

Mutyambai responded by telling him he neither removed traffic officers nor roadblocks from our roads.

He also said he rationalized the system. However, he said nobody should give bribes and should report such incidences accompanied with evidence.

“I neither removed traffic officers nor roadblocks from our roads, I rationalized the system. Even then, nobody should give bribes. Kindly report such incidences with evidence.#EngageTheIG,” responded the IG.

Motorists, especially those in the public transport business have complained of extortion by traffic police officers even though none has reported such cases for action.
