Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has declared Monday, October 11, a public holiday.

The day has been set aside as an extension of Huduma Day, which falls on Sunday, October 10.

“In line with the provisions of Section 2 and 4 of the Public Holidays Act (Cap 110), it is hereby confirmed that 11th October 2021 will be a public holiday,” said Matiang’i.

The Public Holidays Act of 1984 provides that when a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following day, a Monday, is also marked as a public holiday.

"Where, in any year, a day in Part 1 of the Schedule falls on a Sunday, then the first succeeding day, not being a public holiday, shall be a public holiday and the first-mentioned day shall cease to be public holiday."

A cabinet meeting held in 2019 approved the renaming of Moi Day to Huduma Day, with the holiday marked on October 10 each year.

Moi Day, which Kenya had been marked since 1988, when late President Daniel Moi celebrated 10 years in power, was scrapped in 2010 after the passing of the constitution.

But on November 7, 2017, the High Court restored October 10 as a public holiday which should be observed saying its removal contravened the Public Holidays Act.
