Kenya National Highways Authority KeNHA will open a section of the Nairobi Expressway to ease traffic congestion along Mombasa Road.

KeNHA has said the move is to ensure effortless movement of vehicles and at the same time promote safety for road users.

Parts of the road to reopen include the section along Imara Daima to GM towards the Airtel.

Motorists on Mombasa road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way have been experiencing lots of problems since last year when the construction of the Expressway linking the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Westlands started.

Through the statement, KeNHA has said it intends to widen the angles of diversion points at such areas as Gateway mall area to ease vehicle movement.

Lanes that were previously closed at Syokiamu and Mlolongo areas will be opened and improvement on two U-turns at various points such as Mlolongo (Allpack) will be improved.

However, KeNHA has cautioned motorists to expect congestion at GM where a new footbridge is being constructed and the Bunyala - Haile Selassie Round About to University way.

The contractor is speeding up construction of 64.8-kilometer Expressway which is going to be the first of its kind in East and Central Africa.

The Authority has also thanked the motorist’s patience during the implementation of those interventions and has also called for courtesy while using the road.

 “KeNHA would like to appreciate all motorists on the patience exercised during the implementation of these interventions,” it said.

Last week, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the construction of the Sh65 billion Expressways will be completed by May next year. Currently, it is 65 per cent complete.
