Kenya has taken up the rotational presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This comes nine months after Kenya joined the UNSC.

It will preside over the affairs of the UNSC for one month, starting October 1, 2021, to October 30, 2021.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared the news of its Twitter handle.

“October 1st to October 31st 2021, Kenya will preside over the affairs of the United Nations Security Council as the country gears up to take the rotational presidency of the council,” the tweet read.

President Uhuru Kenyatta reaffirmed that Kenya’s contribution to the UNSC will continue to be anchored in an enduring hope and firm belief that together we can create a better world.

 “I wish to reaffirm that our contributions to the United Nations Security Council will continue to be anchored in an enduring hope and firm belief that together we can create a better world,” Uhuru said.

He also said he looked forward to joining with other world leaders at the security council.

“I look forward to joining with other leaders at the security council in addressing the intractable challenges to peace, security and development that our world faces,” he continued.

Uhuru also said he was looking forward to negotiating bilateral positions that will secure peace and prosperity for our region, our continent and the world.



During that time, the president will have the mandate to represent UNSC in relations with other UN organs and other member states. The president will also be responsible for conducting UNSC meetings.

The president will also have the prerogative to convene meetings when the need arises, approve provisional agenda, sign verbatim records of the council’s meeting, among other responsibilities.

Since Kenya is a non-permanent member of the UNSC, it is expected to drive capacity building, technical help and heightened coordination to strengthen global counter-terrorism capacities.

Kenya has been dynamic in the fight against terrorism and radicalism within its region.

The country’s history with humanitarian help to refugees, asylum seekers, victims of natural disasters and such is long.
