The Speaker of the National Assembly, Justin Muturi, will be among the top contenders for the presidency in next year's general election after being endorsed by the Democratic Party (DP) to be its flag bearer.

Muturi had earlier this month promised to declare the party that he will use to secure the country's top seat.

He made his presidential bid public in Nyeri county during a meeting of Mt Kenya delegates led by the National chairman Esau Kioni.

The party has therefore said it has settled on Muturi as its presidential flag bearer come 2022, as he has the attributes of a true leader, which include discipline and integrity.

“Our decision to choose Muturi has been informed by the fact that he represents a national image and has a good record performance as a civil servant," read the party's statement

Dismissing the ongoing formations of coalitions in the country, Kioni said the Democratic Party would traverse the edges of this country to campaign for their candidate.

"As a party, we have decided to settle on Muturi as our flag bearer and let no one cheat on Kenyans that he will backslide or join another coalition. He will kick it all the way to the ballot," said Kioni.

Muturi in his first chat with Netizens on Twitter under trending hashtag #ChatWithJM Muturi promised to with like-minded leaders as long as they share the same visions and ideologies.

He was responding to a question on whether he was willing to work with former Prime Minister and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

When asked about his preferred running mate, Muturi said it was something in progress and the lucky candidate would be unveiled in due time.

If elected as president, Muturi has promised to streamline the public sector by appointing the right people in the office, adding the need to have youth taking up roles in the ministries

“The youth should take most slots in the Ministries since they are the majority, even then integrity MUST come first,” said Muturi.
