Kenyan staff working at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) bureau in Nairobi have some reason to smile after the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) negotiated a pay rise.

Rachael Akidi, Head of BBC East Africa, said through aninternal communication that BBC and KUJ had reached a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) bringing into effect the pay increase.

"I’m pleased to let you know that the BBC has reached an agreement with the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) on the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The CBA will be in effect until 31 July 2023,” the statement read in part.

According to the communication, all eligible staff will get a 7 per cent salary increment from end month.

"All eligible staff in Kenya will receive a 7% wage increment effective 1 August 2021,” the statement continued.

The BBC and KUJ said they will convene a meeting again in June 2022 to agree to a pay offer for the second year of their agreement, which will commence on August 1, 2022.

The British media house also said it would update the pay in the September payroll and will backdate any increases to August 1, 2021.

“We will now start to update pay for the September payroll and will backdate any increases to 1 August,” the statement read in part.

The deal will benefit all Kenyan BBC employees including those who are not members of KUJ, according to the statement.
