The Chairperson of Matatu Owners Association Simon Kimutai has dismissed the much-speculated matatu strike notice as fake.

Kimutai denied there are any planned matatu strikes countrywide in reaction to the increased fuel prices and dismissed the notice as fake.

He asked matatu operators to ignore the viral notice that has been circulating since Wednesday, claiming that they would cease to operate on Thursday noon in a demonstration against the fuel price increase.

“Please note that all matatus will be parked along Thika Road until the Government acts on the matter,” read the purported strike notice.

Regarding the anticipated hike in fares, Kimutai said would be their last resort as they are currently engaging the Government to find a solution that will cushion Kenyans against the effects of the hike in fuel prices.

“That would be our last resort. For now, we are engaging the Government to see how Kenyans can be cushioned against the high fuel costs,” he added.

Commuters are a worried lot since the announcement by EPRA showing the increase in fuel prices because they know the burden will trickle down to them even.

This comes as the country is struggling to get out of an economic rut that was compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic.
