President Uhuru Kenyatta has suspended Justice Mary Muthoni Gitumbi, Judge of the Environment and Land Court.

This follows a petition by the Justice Service Commission (JSC) to remove Gitumbi from office.

Gitumbi’s suspension was announced in a Kenya Gazette notice dated August 23, 2021.

JSC opined that Gitumbi was unable to perform the functions of her office because of mental incapacity.

The decision was arrived at after JSC considered various medical reports and found grounds for her removal from office.

Her suspension from office was effective immediately.

The president also formed a tribunal to look into the matter and he expects it to prepare and submit a report as well as its recommendations.

Lady Justice Omondi Hellen Omollo will chair the tribunal.

Members appointed to the tribunal include Justice Luka Kiprotich Kimaru, Lady Justice Linnet Ndolo, Peter Munge Murage, Mary Martha Nyakado Bonyo, Dr Frank Njenga, and Dr Margaret Othieno Makonyengo.

Josiah Musili and Dr Patrick Amoth are the Joint Secretaries in the tribunal.

Emmanuel Omondi Bitta will be the Lead Counsel and Peter Muriithi Njeru will assist him.
