You could now get into serious trouble if you spit openly in the streets, blow your nose without a handkerchief or play loud music.

This is after the Nairobi County Government signed into law the Public Nuisance Bill 2021.

Acting Nairobi County Governor Ann Kananu signed the bill sponsored by Riruta MCA Kariuki Kiriba into law.

The new law bans blowing your nose without a handkerchief or a tissue paper or spitting into the streets within the city.

Also prohibited by the new law is urinating in undesignated places, discharging dirty water or effluent into the streets or water drainage systems, discharging oil onto the road or into drainage systems.

Obstruction of the roads or streets, playing of loud music in undesignated areas, riding motorcycles or driving on footpaths has also been prohibited and will see offenders penalised.

Nairobi City residents are also warned not to allow trees or hedges in their homes or workplaces to obstruct the streets or the footpaths.

Smoking in undesignated places across the county has also been prohibited in the new regulations.

Kananu encouraged city residents to familiarize themselves with the new rules to avoid being in trouble with the law, saying the move is aimed at fostering a cleaner environment to operate in.

One risks being fined or going to jail for flouting any of the new rules.
