The Teachers Service Commission has announced a 7-day ultimatum to teachers countrywide to take the COVID-19 jab or risk facing disciplinary actions.

This was announced by the TSC CEO Nancy Macharia.

This follows TSC’s discovery that the uptake of the COVID-19 jab by teachers is wanting despite the fact that they were given priority as frontline workers.

Macharia said that the MoH has affirmed the availability of the vaccine.

County and regional directors of education have been charged with the responsibility to provide the number they have facilitated to receive the vaccine and also those teachers who are yet to take the jab.

“We will be asking from our county directors and regional directors the number of teachers they have facilitated to get the vaccination and how many teachers are not vaccinated and for whatever reasons because MoH has assured us that there are enough vaccines,” said Macharia.

According to statistics, 549 teachers have contracted the COVID-19 virus and 81 of them are reported to have succumbed to the virus.

So far, 110,432 teachers have been fully vaccinated out of 330,671 that is on TSC payroll and 150,000 in private institutions.

KUPPET has blamed the low uptake of the vaccine among teachers on the timing of the schedule of vaccination.

TSC wants to increase the number of teachers vaccinated within seven days to before the government’s 23rd deadline for all civil servants to get vaccinated.
