Hundreds of Kenyans were stranded on Mombasa Road on Friday night following a gridlock.

The gridlock lasted hours, forcing some motorists to switch off their vehicles at various points and take naps.

It also forced some matatu passengers to disembark from the matatus and find alternative means namely boda boda to their destinations.

Mombasa Road has recently experienced such traffic snarl-ups because of the construction of the expressway.

Sections of the road have been closed or narrowed to pave way for the contractors to do their work.

The construction of the expressway has also affected other services, including water supply.

The most affected people are those that work in the city and stay in far places along Mombasa Road towards Athi River, Machakos or Kitengela.

The traffic jam on Mombasa Road has been perennial and the affected masses have complained but a solution is nowhere in the offing.
