Kenyan lawyer Paul Gicheru has been surrendered to the custody of the International Criminal Court (ICC) by Dutch authorities and arrived at the Court's detention centre in The Netherlands.

According to the Hague-based court, Gicheru, a lawyer formerly based in Kenya, is suspected of offences against the administration of justice including corruptly influencing ICC witnesses.

Gicheru surrendered to the authorities of The Netherlands on November 2 following an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in 2015.

The Kenyan lawyer was transferred on Wednesday to the custody of ICC after the completion of the necessary national arrest proceedings as stipulated in the Dutch laws.

The suspect’s first appearance before the Hague-based court is expected to take place shortly after his arrival at the detention center.

During the suspect’s first appearance, the Pre-Trial Chamber is expected to confirm his identity and ensure he understands well the charges facing him before the international court.

The Chamber will also confirm the language in which the proceedings should be conducted, and set a date to commence the confirmation of charges hearing.
