Presidential candidates in the 2022 elections will be allowed to spend a maximum of Sh4.4 billion during their campaigns.

This is according to the gazette notice issued by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The other elective positions, namely gubernatorial, senatorial and women representative positions, have also had their spending regulated.

Also prescribed in the gazette are the spending limits of those seeking positions in the National Assembly and County Assembly.

The geographical size and population of a specific region being represented inform the expenditure limit.

The County that has the highest spending limit is Turkana capped at Sh123 million followed by Nairobi at Sh117 million and Marsabit at Sh114 million.

The county that has the lowest spending limit is Lamu placed at Sh21 million, followed by Tharaka Nithi at Sh23 million and Elgeyo Marakwet at Sh25 million.

The gazette notice also showed that political parties are allowed to spend not more than Sh17 million with authorization being given on campaign activities or items including revenue payment, administrative costs, transport, advertising, campaign personnel, transport or any other expenditure that can be justified.

According to the gazette, a contribution from a single source is limited to twenty

per cent of the total contributions.

Any violations to the prescribed spending limits without reporting the fact to the electoral commission will attract a prison term not exceeding five years or a fine not exceeding Sh2million or both, under the Election Financing Act.

However, the regulations by the IEBC are still pending approval from the National Assembly.
