Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has been released on a Sh100,000 cash bail.

Barasa was arraigned in Kimilili Law Courts before Resident Magistrate Gladys Adhiambo to answer to assault charges against a contractor named Stephen Masinde.

He stood accused of assaulting Masinde on Saturday at Baptist Lurare Primary School and causing him grievous bodily harm following an argument that quickly turned violent.

Barasa denied the charges and was released on a Sh150,000 bond with a surety or Sh100,000 cash bail.

After the court session ended, the two parties both addressed the press separately.

Masinde’s lawyer, Brian Khaemba commended the police for taking action swiftly and urged the court to prosecute the MP and set an example of him.

“We want to laud police for swiftly arresting the MP whom we want the courts to ensure that he serves as an example to other leaders with such traits,” Khaemba said.

The plaintiff also made a request to have the case transferred elsewhere as long as it was outside Kimilili Constituency to enable the Masinde to take part freely in the court proceedings without fear of retribution since he does not come from the same locality.

“We have also made an application to have this case moved from here in Kimilili to any other court outside this constituency so that my client who does not hail from this constituency may be free and safe to proceed with the case,” added Khaemba.

On the other hand, Barasa termed the case as a political witch-hunt and alleged that they were being pushed by Khaemba.

He also claimed that Khaemba is keen on taking over from him as the area MP hence the interest in the case.

Barasa was arrested at his Kimilili home on Monday morning before being taken to court.

The case will be mentioned on September 27, 2021.
