Kakamega County government’s chief of staff Robert Sumbi succumbed to Coronavirus on Thursday morning at the Kakamega County General Hospital.

Sumbi died after being admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) five days earlier.

Only a day ago, Governor Wycliffe Oparanya announced the closure of the Kakamega County offices for seven days following a surge in Covid-19 cases.

The county boss had also ordered all county employees to get tested for the deadly virus while ordering the fumigation of the county headquarters offices.

On Tuesday, Kakamega County Assembly sittings were postponed for a fortnight after three Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) tested positive for Covid-19.

Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya and Senator Cleophas Malala are among leaders who have sent their messages of condolence to the family asking for enhanced Covid-19 measures.

Oparanya mourned Sumbi saying:

Malala said, “We are saddened by the death of Sumbi. This is a grim reminder that we need to be cautious and stick to Covid-19 regulations to contain the spread of the infections in our region.”

Kakamega recorded 316 positive virus cases since the initial four cases were recorded back in June, with seven people losing their lives in five months.

Oparanya had urged residents who have tested positive to elect for the home-based care to help the county decongest its overstretched health facilities.
