Kenya Railways is looking to link the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the Meter Gauge Railway to provide a seamless connection between the Port of Mombasa and Lake Victoria in Kisumu as well as Malaba.

The completion of the railway line will lead to a reduction of the number of tracks on the road, facilitate easy movement of goods from Mombasa to Uganda and ease travelling of passengers to the Western part of Kenya.
