A woman has been shot in the abdomen at the Kiminini market after being mistaken for widely sought after fugitive corporal Caroline Kangogo.

The Trans-Nzoia Police commander Fredrick Ochieng has confirmed the incident.

He said that Muyondo made a mistake in discharging his firearm only on suspicion that the woman was Kangogo.

He also reiterated that just because someone is called Chemutai and is said to be dangerous, it does not justify their shooting.

He also said that even if one has confirmation of the fugitive, it is still not advisable to shoot.

The woman identified as Phanice Chemutai who hails from Kaboiywo village is said to have been trying to acquire a gun from one Ken Muyondo, who is a licensed gun holder.

According to the police report, the two were supposed to meet at Kiminini market.

Muyondo, being a good citizen, reported the incident to the Kiminini police station out of civic duty and for fear of being Kangogo’s next victim.

He suspected Chemutai could be the fugitive cop being sought by the police.

Muyondo fired a single shot at the woman during the arranged meeting to warn her he meant business.

“The OCS arranged a team and laid a trap and the lady met with the reportee who fired a single shot to scare her and she was arrested,” the police report reads.

Police later arrested Chemutai and took her for interrogation before transferring her to Kitale County Referral Hospital for treatment after they discovered a gunshot wound on her abdomen.

The wound was discovered when the police were conducting a body search on her.

During the interrogation, she told the police that they had a previous meeting with Muyondo and even exchanged contacts, hence her persistent calls.

Muyondo’s firearm; a Ceska pistol with 10 rounds of ammunition and a spent cartridge were retrieved from the scene and are being held as exhibit.
