Chaos erupted at the burial ceremony of former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo.

This came after police tried to bar Gem residents, who had come from far and wide, to pay their last respects to their fallen leader from accessing the venue.

The mourners thronged Ndori Primary School, the venue where the ceremony was supposed to take place before the burial at his compound.

Police tried to control irate mourners from accessing the venue as they were under strict instructions to allow in just a handful in compliance with the government’s Covid-19 containment measures and the Ministry of Health’s burial protocols.

Mourners tried to gain forceful entry, and a melee ensued, prompting the police to lob teargas to disperse the surging crowd.

The disgruntled mourners had no choice but to comply with the rules, albeit disappointed that they won't pay their last respects to their leader, who they say served them well.

Many political leaders are expected to attend Jakoyo’s burial including Raila Odinga, James Orengo, Eugene Wamalwa among others.
