The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Wilson Sossion shed tears on Friday afternoon as he announced his resignation.

The nominated MP announced his resignation on June 25, 2021, at a press conference held at the Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club.

"I bow out of KNUT as the Secretary-General. I shall remain loyal to KNUT and will always be available to advise and support the leadership of the union," Sossion announced.

His resignation has come just a few hours to the union elections.

Sossion cited the lack of government's support as the reason for his resignation.

He has been under pressure from teachers who demanded his resignation from his position.

Sossion was nominated in 2017 by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party to represent the interests of teachers in parliament.

He said he would now shift his focus to more political matters.

“I have outgrown KNUT. My responsibility now shifts to Parliament,” he said.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) deregistered Sossion as a teacher in May 2021.

He challenged the decision but lost the case against the TSC that sought to remove him from the teachers' register through a gazette.

Sossion accused the TSC of plotting to destroy KNUT in order to control teachers' welfare.

Sossion took over the position of KNUT Secretary-General in 2013 after replacing David Okuta Osiany.
