The driver of the matatu, which was involved in the accident that killed the daughter of Deputy Inspector General of Police Edward Mbugua, has been detained for four more days.

The driver, Patrick Macharia Magu, was arraigned in court Senior Resident Magistrate Esther Kimilu’s court on Friday.

He was arrested on June 17, 2021, after he allegedly caused the death of Nelly Waithera by driving dangerously.

Apparently, after causing the accident Magu is reported to have tried to evade justice by abandoning the KMO Sacco minibus he was driving and fled.

“The suspect’s action of escaping from the scene is a clear indication that he had no intention of reporting the accident or presenting himself to any police station or police officer,” read a court document.

Police later tracked him down to University way and arrested him promptly. He was detained at the Central Police Station.

The police report indicates that Magu was reversing his matatu dangerously without due care to other road users at the Tom Mboya Street and Murang’a lane junction.

Unfortunately, the deceased was crossing from Tom Mboya Street and got sandwiched between the matatu Magu was driving and another vehicle.

She sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries.

The court allowed the police to keep the suspect in holding for 4 more days pending the conclusion of investigations into the incident.
