A bizarre incident was witnessed in Vihiga on Madaraka day when a family obstructed the Vihiga-Kisumu road with a corpse.

Reports say that the family of the deceased were turned away from the mortuary facility by mortuary attendants at the Vihiga County Referral Hospital claiming that they were on Madaraka Day Holiday.

That prompted the irate relatives of the deceased to explore for other alternatives meanwhile, placed the corpse by the roadside.

Any attempts to convince the hospital to admit the body of their loved one into the body preservation facility fell on deaf ears.

“This is my mother who is lying here. We brought her to the hospital yesterday, and she passed on, but they have refused to talk to us and are closing the gate when they see us,” said some kin to the deceased.

That is when the family resorted to borrowing a stretcher from the hospital, placed the body on it and moved it right to the middle of the Vihiga-Kisumu road.

They blocked the road, causing a traffic snarl-up and also attracted an immense crowd of people who came to witness the incident.

Police attention was drawn to the incident, and they had to disperse the surging crowd with teargas as they tried to decongest the road.

The unfortunate incident occurred following an impasse between hospital administration and staff.

However, the hospital is yet to issue an official statement regarding the bizarre incident.
