Martha Koome was on Friday afternoon sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya, taking over from David Maraga, who retired earlier this year.

Lady Justice Koome took the oath of office during a ceremony presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi at around 1pm.

"This is a momentous occasion, witnessed with joy & hope not only because I am the first woman in Kenya to take this office but because every time a member of the marginalized group breaks a barrier, they hold a space for the dreams and hopes of others," said Justice Koome.

She now becomes the first female Chief Justice, President of the Supreme Court of Kenya and the third CJ under the current constitution after Dr Willy Mutunga and David Maraga.

Justice William Ouko was also sworn in as judge of the Supreme Court at the same event.

Justice Ouko takes over from Jackton Ojwang who retired after attaining the mandatory age of 70.

The President wished Justices Koome and Ouko well in their new endavours and appealed to them to ensure they execute their mandates effectively and deliver justice in the courts.

“Mine is only to wish you God’s blessings. We are here to partner with you and work together with you. Both of you have come from the grassroots and have been in the system. Do what is just and we will not have a problem,” he said.
