The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Tuesday night suspended the tallying process in the Juja Constituency parliamentary by-election.

IEBC said the decision followed the disruption of vote calculation at the Mang’u High School on Tuesday by persons said to be linked to Kiambu Governor James Nyoro.

“At around 10:20pm tonight there was disruption of the tallying process at Mang’u High School Tallying center in Juja Constituency by a group of individuals led by the Kiambu County Governor James Nyoro,” said IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati in a statement.

Chebukati said the acts of hooliganism at the Juja tallying center made it impossible for the tallying process by the electoral body to proceed.

“In order to ensure the safety of our staff, the election materials and to preserve the integrity of the election process, the Commission hereby suspends the tallying process and announcement of results until normalcy is fully restored,” he added.

IEBC confirmed that it had secured all election material and results brought into the tallying center by the Presiding Officer earlier in the day.

The IEBC boss took the opportunity to appeal to the candidates in the Juja by-election remain calm until the exercise resumes probably on Wednesday morning.

“The Commission regrets the developments as maintenance of law and order during elections is not its mandate,” Chebukati added.
