Senators on Monday overwhelmingly voted to confirm the impeachment of Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mohamud by the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs).

25 out of 31 senators voted on Monday evening in favour of the ouster motion filed in the Senate by Wajir MCAs and 2 voted against it while 4 abstained from the vote.

Abdi was ousted by the Ward Representatives on grounds of abuse of office among other charges and the Senators found him guilty of gross violation of the Constitution.

An 11-member Senate special committee chaired by Nyamira Senator Okong'o Omogeni had proposed the impeachment of the Wajir Governor after an investigation into allegations of fraud and abuse of office claims contained in the ouster charges tabled by MCAs.

Strangely and for the first time in the House’s history, Omogeni, who chaired the special committee that probed governor Abdi, disowned the report and abstained from the vote.

Senators James Orengo, Mutula Kilonzo and Ochilo Ayacko abstained from the ballot while Kipchumba Murkomen and Samson Cherargey opposed the ouster and voted to save Abdi.

The MCAs, in their ouster motion, levelled two charges against the Wajir County boss; gross violation of the constitution and abuse of office, which were supported by 17 allegations.

In their motion, MCAs supported the first charge with 15 claims while the second charge was backed by two allegations.
