Nyeri tycoon, Stephen Wang’ondu who was accused of hiring hitmen to murder his son has died.

Wang’ondu died at the Outspan Hospital in Nyeri, where he was admitted after being released from detention. His cause of death has not been established yet.

According to reports, his lawyer alerted the court of his ill health and hospitalization during the bond application. The judge declared that the prosecution had failed to provide enough evidence to warrant his further detention.

The 74-year-old tycoon was released together with his co-accused on a Sh1 million bond.

The deceased was arrested on February 24th, 2021 concerning his son Daniel Mwangi’s murder that occurred on January 1st, 2021.

It is alleged that Wang’ondu was intent on collecting an insurance claim on his son after his death, therefore, prompting him to hire 4 hitmen to assassinate his son at Sh160 000.

In another incident that occurred in 1995 that the detectives linked to the ongoing case, Wang’ondu was compensated after his son had drowned at his ranch.

The deceased was supposed to appear in court on May 10th, 2021 for another hearing.
