A 25-year-old woman of Malian descent has given birth to nonuplets (9 babies) at a private Ain Borja clinic in Casablanca, Morocco.

Halima Cissy delivered her babies; five girls and four boys through the Caesarean section on Tuesday 4th May 2021.

The delivery of the 9 babies came as a surprise, as earlier ultrasound scans had revealed only 7 babies.

Due to the complications involved, the ill equipment of the health facilities in Mali and their inability to handle exceptional multiple births, the government ordered her to be flown to Morocco where she delivered her babies for special care.

According to a statement issued by the Mali health minister Fanta Siby, the nonuplets who were delivered prematurely at 30 weeks and their mother who lost a lot of blood in the process are all doing well and are in stable condition.

"The newborns (five girls and four boys) and their mother, are all doing well," said the minister.

The minister congratulated the medical teams from both Mali and Morocco for the positive outcome.

The world record of multiple births at a single time is currently being held by one Nadya Suleman (USA). Nadya gave birth to octuplets (six boys and two girls) on 20th January 2009. Nady’s children all survived and are now 12.

Two other nonuplet birth cases have been previously recorded, one in Australia in 1971 and another in Malaysian in 1999. Unfortunately, none of the babies survived after a few days.
