Motorists heading into, out of and through the Nairobi city center will have to contend with more traffic for 21 more days following the closure of a section of Uhuru Highway.

According to Kenya National Highways Authority (KENHA), the section between Bunyala and Nyayo Stadium roundabouts will be closed to allow construction of the Nairobi Expressway.

KENHA says the section will be shut from Friday to May 20 when the building of a section of the expressway in that area will be finished, with motorists urged to use alternative routes.

“There will be traffic disruption along Liberty Highway from Friday, April 30, 2021, to Thursday, May 20. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause as we strive to provide a secure, secure and reliable network,” said KeNHA Director General Peter Mundinia, in a statement.

The closure of the section is expected to start a day after another closure of a section on the stretch that lasted 20 days starting on April 9.

Motorists exiting the Nairobi CBD and using Uhuru Highway will now have to use Bunyala Road-Workshop Road-Lusaka before joining Mombasa Road at the Nyayo Stadium roundabout.

The ongoing construction of the Sh60 billion Nairobi Expressway from Mlolongo to Westlands is already causing traffic nightmares for many Mombasa Road users.

Speaking while inspecting the expressway construction earlier in April, Transport CS James Macharia lauded the progress assuring that the projects will be completed by December.
