The late Sergeant Kipyegon Kenei did not like working at Deputy President William Ruto’s office and sought to be transferred at least two times before he was found murdered.

This is according to his father, John Chesang, who said his son Kenei had complained about the discrimination he had been facing at Dr Ruto’s office where he had worked for 8 years.

Kenei was found dead at his Imara Daima estate house in Nairobi on February 20, 2020 with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) ruling out suicide as the cause of death.

A year later, DCI headed by George Kinoti has not revealed what progress made in the probe despite giving an assurance that his office would get to the bottom of the matter promptly.

Chesang spoke during an interview on KTN News one year after his son's death, as he narrated what he complained about while working at the Harambee House Annex.

“My son worked at that office for 7 years but wanted to move somewhere else because he was a Tugen and most of his colleagues were Nandi. He experienced challenges at his workplace and could not travel outside the office as his colleagues would. His allowances were not paid on time. He painted a picture of discrimination at that office," he said.

He says feels that had his son been granted his wish to be transferred, he would still be alive and blasted the DP for doing nothing to ensure justice for his son after attending his burial.

“The Deputy President came for my son's funeral and said he knew me but never knew Kenei was my son. What if he had known, would my son still be alive? And now that he knows what action has he taken? He appeared uncomfortable with the DCI or FBI investigating the case but has never offered any alternative for us to find justice,” he said.

Chesang added that his son had a lot to look forward to before he was found murdered and his father concurs with the DCI position that his Sergeant son did not take his own life.

“I know my son very well. He was building a house. We had planned to go and pay his dowry and he was looking forward to it. He had no reason to commit suicide….I will not name names. Those who killed my son; may they never know peace. His blood should haunt them and their families."
