Deputy President William Ruto was on Thursday afternoon forced to cancel a fundraising event scheduled to be held in Nyamira after chaos erupted amid heavy police presence.

DP Ruto announced that he had opted to push forward the meeting to next week Thursday after consultations he said he held with leaders from Nyamira backing his presidential bid.

Police were forced to lob teargas to disperse crowds in Nyamira ahead of the visit by the second in command who has been traversing the country making donations in cash and in kind to endear voters to rally behind his bid to replace Uhuru in the 2022 general election.

The incidence comes only days after violence erupted at another event graced by the DP in Murang’a after two rival groups allied to Jubilee Party’s Tangatanga and Kieleweke factions collided.

It also comes a day after the National Security Advisory Council (NSAC), led by Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua, warned against rising political temperatures and incitement by leaders.

But former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioner Roselyn Akombe felt DP Ruto deserved all that was coming to him.

According to Akombe, Ruto opposed promulgation of the constitution and later supported police brutality while he still enjoyed bromance with president Uhuru Kenyatta.
