Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya has shut town 84 illegal pharmacies in Nyanza region
This comes after the board decided to carry out a crackdown on all illegal pharmacies in the region, a process that commenced on September 20.
So far a total of 137 boxes of assorted medicines have been confisticated by the inspectors from the board in an exercise that was carried out in the counties of Kisumu, Nyamira, Kisii, Homabay, Migori and Siaya.
Dr Dominic Kariuki who is the Deputy Director Inspectorate and Enforcement has said their concern is on those managers who leave their licensed pharmacy outlets in the hands of unqualified persons hence risking the lives of Kenyans.
All pharmacy outlets with expired drugs were directed to safely quarantine them and get in touch with the regional inspectors of Pharmacy & Poisons Board for safe disposal.
Similarly, the board has already distributed mini-labs to its regional offices for random sampling and testing of medicines in the market to ensure that medicines in Kenyan market are good, safe and effective.
The board has also trained health workers and its stakeholders to identify and report poor quality medicines using the PPB poor quality medicines reporting tools.
At the moment, 80 people have been arrested, arraigned in court and charged with various offenses.
