As infections by Covid-19 continue to surge each day, it is emerging that the pandemic is claiming more Kenyans above the age of 60 as compared to other age groups infected.

According to data released by Ministry of Health on Thursday, Coronavirus has claimed the lives of 1,089 people above the age of 60 since the first infection was confirmed last year.

Cumulative deaths recorded in Kenya is 2,292 after 16 more were reported; one occurring in the last 24 hours, one in the past month and 14 being late death reports from facility record audits.

Below are the cumulative fatalities in Kenya by age;

• 0-9 years (45),

• 10-19 years (17),

• 20-29 (94),

• 30-39 years (205),

• 40-49 years (322),

• 50-59 years (520),

• 60 years and above (1,089).

MoH announced 1,698 people tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, from 11,352 samples tested, putting the positivity rate at 14.9 per cent and confirmed cases at 143,063.

The new confirmed cases of the virus are distributed by age as follows;

• 0-9 years (57),

• 10-19 years (62),

• 20-29 years (228),

• 30-39 years (441),

• 40-49 years (343),

• 50-59 years (268),

• 60 and above (299).

Similarly, 456 patients recovered from the ailment, 267 from Home Based and Isolation Care, and 189 from various health facilities countrywide, raising total recoveries to 97,650.

So far, a total of 378,363 people have been vaccinated with the Astrazeneca vaccine; 104,726 are health workers, 30,821 security officers and 52,420 teachers, while 190,396 are members of the public, including those aged 58 and above.
