A total of 1,146 candidates scored Grade A in the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) out of the 881,416 candidates, compared to 1,138 in the 2021 exam.

This was revealed by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, who released the KCSE results at Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) headquarters in Nairobi on Friday.

Machogu has noted that there was a significant improvement in the performance by the 2022 KCSE candidates compared to the ones who sat the exam in the previous year.

The CS revealed that a total of 173,345 candidates who sat the 2022 KCSE exam attained C+ and above, the minimum entry grade to public universities compared to 145,776 in 2021.

Similarly, 522,588 candidates got grade D+ and above in the 2022 KCSE exam even as candidates who got grade E reduced ominously to 30,822 compared to 46,151 in 2021.

“Encouragingly, the number of candidates obtaining a mean grade of E in 2022 declined significantly to 30,822 (3.49%) despite the increase in candidature, compared with 46,151 in 2021. This clearly leads us to conclude that most of the candidates scored grades of higher quality,” Machogu said.

The CS added that there was remarkable improvement in 17 subjects compared to 11 in 2021, even as the performance in four subjects recorded insignificant change.
