Kenya’s economic ties with China are set to deepen as both nations explore new areas of collaboration in trade, infrastructure, and digital transformation.
This commitment was reaffirmed during a meeting between National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and China’s new ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, at Parliament Buildings in Nairobi.
A key focus of the discussions was China’s role in Kenya’s infrastructure development, with Wetang’ula recognising the impact of Chinese-funded projects on the country’s economic growth.
He pointed to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a driving force behind major projects such as the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and extensive road networks that have improved connectivity and trade efficiency.
"China has been a reliable development partner, supporting Kenya’s transformation through key infrastructure projects. We look forward to deepening this collaboration and ensuring sustained growth," Wetang'ula remarked.

Beyond infrastructure, Kenya is keen to harness China’s expertise in technology to modernise key sectors, including governance and public service delivery.
Wetang’ula emphasised the need for advanced digital systems to enhance efficiency, record-keeping, and public engagement.
"Technology-driven legislative processes will enhance transparency and governance. We seek China’s expertise in this area to modernise our parliamentary systems," he noted.
Education also emerged as a critical pillar of economic cooperation, with Kenya advocating for increased scholarship opportunities for its students.
Wetang’ula highlighted the importance of equipping Kenyan youth with language and technical skills to tap into opportunities within Chinese enterprises operating in Africa.
"The expansion of Confucius Institutes and Mandarin language training will equip our young people with skills needed in today’s global economy, especially as Chinese companies continue to expand their presence in Africa," he stated.
Kenya currently hosts four Confucius Institutes, established to promote cultural exchange and prepare students for careers linked to China’s growing economic influence.
One of these institutions was launched by Wetang’ula during his tenure as Foreign Minister.
Expressing China’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s economic aspirations, Ambassador Haiyan reaffirmed Beijing’s dedication to key development sectors.
"China values its partnership with Kenya and remains dedicated to supporting key development initiatives in infrastructure, trade, and education," she said.
With both nations reinforcing their strategic collaboration, Kenya stands to benefit from enhanced trade partnerships, technological advancements, and expanded educational opportunities, ensuring a stronger economic foundation for future growth.
