Amsons Group has officially begun integrating Bamburi Cement into its portfolio after securing a dominant stake in the Kenyan cement giant.

The move follows the closure of a Sh23.6 billion ($183 million) transaction, cementing Amsons' control with over 95 per cent equity shares through its local subsidiary, Amsons Industries Kenya Limited.

Edha Nahdi, Amsons Group Managing Director, assured stakeholders that the company would uphold the standards set by Bamburi’s former majority shareholders, Holcim Ltd and Lafarge.

“From the onset, I want to assure Bamburi Cement stakeholders of our commitment to upholding and enhancing the high operating and commercial standards set by Holcim Ltd and Lafarge. That is our promise to our customers, employees, banks, suppliers and all stakeholders,” Nahdu stated.

To ensure a seamless transition, the new owners will retain the existing executive team, including Mohit Kapoor, the Bamburi Cement CEO.

Nahdi underscored the importance of continuity, emphasising that the company would build upon the foundation laid by its predecessors while driving further growth.

“Together with our flagship cement business, Camel Cement, and the growing Mbeya Cement operations, we are proud to welcome Bamburi Cement as part of this dynamic and forward-thinking group,” he said.

Looking ahead, Amsons Group has unveiled ambitious expansion plans, pledging an additional Sh52.1 billion investment over the next three years.

A significant portion of this funding will go towards the construction of a new integrated clinker plant in Matuga, Kwale County, a move aimed at strengthening Bamburi Cement’s market position.

“We are confident that these investments will position the company for sustained success and strengthen Bamburi Cement’s market leadership,” Nahdi remarked.

The acquisition was the culmination of a fierce battle for control, with Savannah Clinker initially tabling a Sh25.4 billion offer in December last year in a bid for full ownership.

However, the rival firm later pulled out, leaving Amsons Group as the last contender standing—paving the way for the Tanzanian conglomerate to cement its presence in Kenya’s construction industry.
