The much-awaited Bumala Modern Market, strategically positioned along the Kisumu-Busia highway, is set to be officially launched by President William Ruto on Friday.

This project is part of the Kenya Kwanza Government’s pledge to construct over 400 modern markets across the country, aimed at providing traders with a dignified and secure environment to conduct business.

The market, a hub of activity even before its completion, has already started benefiting the local community.

Food vendor Electina Akello, a Bumala resident, has leveraged the ongoing construction to grow her business.

“I have been selling food at this site for the last one month. When the developer set up to start the construction of this market, I approached him and requested that I be allowed to provide food to the workers. This ensures that they eat together and saves on time during tea and lunch breaks,” she said.

Akello, who has employed six workers in her eatery, remains optimistic that the completed market will offer her an opportunity to establish a new hotel within the premises.

“Such opportunities spur growth and empower local communities urging politicians to support the Government in its development agenda,” she added.

The market has also provided job opportunities for local youths, with employment numbers expected to rise to 200 as construction progresses.

Once operational, the market will accommodate over 500 traders from Busia, Vihiga, Bungoma, and neighbouring counties.

Its modern amenities will include a cold room, a food court, an ICT hub, an ablution block, and a dedicated area for young mothers, ensuring a comprehensive space for both trade and community activities.

Traders like Margaret Atieno are looking forward to the market’s completion, hoping for fair allocation of spaces.

“The market will dignify our trade,” Atieno said, calling on the government to prioritise local vendors currently operating in the open-air market.

The construction of the Bumala Modern Market is likely to improve grassroots trade and create better opportunities for small-scale traders.

As the launch approaches, the community is abuzz with anticipation, eager to witness the transformation this project will bring to the region.
