Safaricom PLC has announced the appointment of Edward Okaro as an Independent Non-Executive Director, effective Wednesday the previous week.
The telecommunications giant made the disclosure through a statement issued by its acting company secretary, Linda Mesa Wambani.
Okaro brings to the role over 30 years of extensive experience in financial management, auditing, and strategic risk management.
His career includes a 26-year tenure at Ernst & Young, where he ascended to the position of Director and eventually Partner in the Africa Risk Services division.
The statement highlighted Okaro's academic achievements, noting his Master's degree in Business Administration from Manchester Business School and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi (UoN).

He is also a Fellow Certified Public Accountant (FCPA) recognised by the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and a member of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA).
In welcoming Okaro to the board, Safaricom’s leadership expressed confidence in his ability to contribute significantly to the company’s governance and strategic direction.
The board concluded its announcement with a formal note of approval, underscoring Okaro's credentials as pivotal in strengthening the company’s position in a competitive sector.
