The Safaricom Foundation has introduced the Wezesha Agri-Eco Hub Project in Busia County, targeting the empowerment of over 5,000 youth through training in agribusiness, enterprise development, and ecopreneurship.

According to the foundation, the pilot initiative, funded with an investment of Sh120 million, is set to run over two years and involves key partners including Ustadi Foundation, Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA), Alupe University, and the County Government of Busia.

The foundation stated that the programme aims to equip participants with skills in agribusiness, digital literacy, and value chain management.

Additionally, it intends to integrate climate-smart farming practices to bolster sustainable agricultural production among youth-led farms in the region.

According to the foundation, more than 4,000 youth will have the opportunity to access digital finance solutions, offering loans, savings, and insurance to support their agribusiness ventures.

A notable feature of the project, as highlighted by the foundation, is the creation of a Demo Farm Centre of Excellence in Alupe, which will provide hands-on training and expose participants to innovative techniques such as solar-powered irrigation and biogas systems.

Digital tools for accessing financial services and connecting with markets will also be incorporated.

The foundation noted that the initiative benefits from contributions by multiple partners.

Ustadi Foundation has allocated Sh18 million to support the programme’s implementation, while the LBDA is offering a 12-acre demonstration farm and providing technical expertise.

Alupe University is also contributing to the project, and the County Government of Busia is assisting in its execution.

According to the foundation, this new project builds on previous phases, such as the one in Kajiado County, which helped over 1,000 youth and women start successful agribusinesses.

If the pilot in Busia is successful, the programme is set to expand to 18 other counties across Kenya.

The foundation stated that the project aims to create employment opportunities and establish connections for youth-led agribusinesses to local and international markets.
