Kenya Airways (KQ) CEO Allan Kilavuka has been appointed the new Chairperson of the Africa’s Airline Association (AFRAA) at the 56th Annual General Assembly and Summit in Cairo, Egypt.
KQ has termed Kilavuka’s appointment a significant milestone for both the airline and Africa's aviation industry and which is bound to shape the future of the aviation industry in the continent.
In his new role, he will guide AFRAA’s strategic direction, represent member airlines’ interests, and push policies promoting growth, sustainability and competitiveness of Africa's aviation industry.
Kilavuka will head the new association for a renewable one-year term and has termed his appointment as a privilege.
“I am deeply appreciative of this opportunity and look forward to working alongside industry peers to amplify Africa’s voice in the global aviation, build on greater collaboration, and drive strategic initiatives to enable Africa’s airlines to navigate current challenges and seize new opportunities,” stated Kilavuka.

He takes over the mantle from João Carlos Pó Jorge, the outgoing Chairperson and CEO of LAM Mozambique, who has spearheaded the association for the last two years.
Under his stewardship, AFRAA took substantial measures to address challenges posed by the post-pandemic recovery period, pushing for strategic collaborations, and driving sustainability efforts.
AFRAA, which was established in 1968, is comprised of more than 40 airlines from various countries across Africa, which represent more than 85 per cent of the air transport in the continent.
According to AFRAA, its mission is to nurture industry cooperation, facilitate the growth of African airlines, and ensure the sustainable development of the air transport sector in the continent.
The association actively engages in initiatives that promote a safer, more efficient, and more competitive aviation environment in Africa through its advocacy, research, and member services.
During the General Assembly, conducted in Cairo, Egypt, KQ was also feted with The Airline of the Year Award - Best Improved Profitability for its stellar financial performance and recovery in 2023.
