In a significant move reflecting its ambitions in Africa, JPMorgan Chase has appointed Sailepu Montet as its country manager for Kenya.

This appointment comes on the heels of the bank's recent expansion into the region, including the launch of offices in Ivory Coast earlier this year.

Montet brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously served as the deputy director of financial markets at the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).

During his tenure, which began in July 2021, he was instrumental in overseeing reserves management, showcasing his deep understanding of Kenya’s economic landscape.

Before his stint at CBK, Montet honed his expertise at Absa Bank Kenya, where he held the role of head of capital and liquidity management and later ascended to the position of vice president.

His academic credentials are equally impressive; he holds a master’s degree in accounting and finance risk management from the London School of Economics and a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Leicester.

The Central Bank of Kenya made headlines on Monday by officially authorising JPMorgan Chase to establish a representative office in the country.

These offices serve crucial functions as marketing and liaison hubs, connecting global banking giants with local financial markets.

As JPMorgan sets its sights on Kenya and Ivory Coast, its focus will be on delivering a range of services, including commercial and investment banking, treasury services, and potentially some lending operations.

According to CEO Jamie Dimon, this strategic expansion underscores JPMorgan's commitment to fostering growth in the vibrant African financial sector.

Montet's leadership is expected to play a pivotal role in steering JPMorgan’s growth in Kenya, where his extensive background and local knowledge will be invaluable in navigating the complexities of the market.

With this appointment, JPMorgan Chase is not only solidifying its foothold in Kenya but also signalling its intent to be a key player in the African financial landscape.
