Travellers passing through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) this week will need to adjust their flight plans as the airport gears up for a major transformation.

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced that Terminal 1E, a key gateway for international flights, will temporarily close its doors on Thursday from 7:00 am to allow for essential renovations.

KAA informed passengers of the planned closure via a statement issued on Tuesday,

"Dear Valued Passengers, KAA would like to inform you that Terminal 1E at JKIA will be temporarily closed starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, at 0700 HRS to facilitate essential rehabilitation works," KAA stated.

This development is expected to impact several international flights, with all arrivals and departures shifted to Terminal 1A, the airport’s largest and most modern terminal.

The closure is part of a larger effort to upgrade the facilities at one of Africa’s busiest airports.

KAA assured passengers that safety is their priority during the renovation period.

"During this period, all affected airlines will be processed through Terminal 1A. This decision has been made to ensure the safety of our staff and passengers during the renovation process," the notice read.

As Terminal 1E undergoes its much-needed facelift, the bustling Terminal 1A will take centre stage.

This terminal inaugurated just over a year ago, can comfortably handle up to 2.5 million passengers and is ready to absorb the additional traffic.

KAA is confident that passengers will not only adjust smoothly but will benefit from the improved travel experience once the renovations are complete.

Understanding the potential disruptions, KAA expressed regret for any inconveniences this temporary closure may cause.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time," the authority said.

Terminal 1E has been a crucial hub for at least 10 major international airlines, serving as a critical point for immigration and customs checks.

Its closure signals a significant step towards modernising JKIA, with travellers being assured that the results will be well worth the temporary hassle.

While Terminal 1E takes a brief hiatus, JKIA is banking on Terminal 1A to keep things running smoothly, ensuring that passengers continue to enjoy a seamless travel experience.

For many, this renovation is a promising leap towards JKIA’s future as a premier international travel hub.
