The Kenyan tourism industry is experiencing a remarkable period of growth, with revenue reaching Sh142.5 billion in the first half of the year.

This significant increase represents a 21.3 per cent jump compared to the same period in 2023.

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) attributed the surge in revenue to a combination of factors, including increased international arrivals and a growing domestic tourism market.

The annual wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara National Reserve continues to be a major draw for visitors from around the globe.

The KTB's CEO, June Chepkemei, highlighted the importance of the Maasai Mara as a gateway to explore other regions of Kenya.

She emphasized the country's diverse offerings, which include pristine beaches, ancient cultures, and breathtaking landscapes.

Chepkemei also noted that the country welcomed 1,027,630 international visitors in the first half of the year, marking a 21.3 per cent growth compared to the same period in 2023. These arrivals contributed to a significant increase in tourism revenue.

According to Chepkemei, domestic tourism also played a crucial role in driving the industry's growth.

Chepkemei mentioned that domestic tourism recorded 2.25 million bed nights, a 10 per cent increase from 2.06 million in the corresponding period last year.

This reflects a growing trend among Kenyans to explore their own country's natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Director General Dr. Erustus Kanga underscored the role of sustainable tourism practices in driving the industry's growth.

He praised KWS's efforts to collaborate with government agencies, communities, and businesses to promote eco-friendly initiatives and conserve Kenya's natural resources.

Kanga also emphasized the importance of empowering local communities to participate in nature-based enterprises.
