Kenya Power has issued a call to action for 3.2 million of its customers who have yet to update their prepaid meters, stressing the importance of completing this process by 31st August to maintain uninterrupted electricity access.

This announcement follows the successful update of 4.2 million meters out of the targeted 7.4 million.

Rosemary Oduor, General Manager in charge of Commercial Services and Sales at Kenya Power, reassured customers about the meter update process.

"Once a meter is scheduled, a customer receives an SMS notification and thereafter the update codes are sent to the customer upon purchasing their electricity tokens," Oduor stated.

She emphasised that the update does not impact the cost of electricity or the rate at which tokens are consumed, nor does it affect any tokens already loaded into the meter.

"Our customers are required to update their meters as soon as they receive their codes to continue enjoying access to electricity," Oduor added.

"We are therefore kindly urging those who have not updated yet to purchase their tokens upon which they will receive their codes and be able to update their meters."

This meter update initiative, branded as the 'Update Token Meter Yako' campaign, is part of a broader global effort aimed at all prepaid meters using the Standard Transfer Specification (STS).

STS is a universal method for transferring tokens to prepaid meters, ensuring the security of the tokens generated.

Since all Kenya Power prepaid meters are on the STS specification, they necessitate this update.

The utility firm continues to encourage the remaining customers to act promptly to avoid any disruption in their electricity service.
